and Damned Proud of it!

I'm not very patient with people who are so ego-attached to their opinions that they cannot tolerate alternative views, but profess to be open-minded and interested. This is a real problem with women in academia, where intelligent people don't share their ideas because they are so afraid of hurting someone's feelings, and where political correctness is often used to veil blatant insensitivity. C'mon!

Whatever happened to civil discourse? And when did stifled conflict ever lead to mutual progress?

If I don't agree with something someone else says, and I don't silently withdraw and grumble about how stupid they are. I don't spend twice as long apologizing for the fact that I have an opinion as expressing it, I go directly for clarification. Unfortunately, assertive females are usually considered troublemakers and malcontents. So, I get to choose between feeling stifled or being labeled a bitch (even among other women).

Frankly, I'd rather be a healthy bitch than a compliant woman with a bleeding ulcer.
